Habits, Their Making and Unmaking, New York, Liveright publishing corporation, 1945
American psychologist and president of the American Psychological Association (APA). He
developed a paradoxical theory, inviting patients to do with effort something that we strive with
effort not to do, the idea being to perhaps stop disturbing behaviors by bringing under careful
control responses that were unwanted, unintentional.
